Why Pop Culture T-Shirts Are So On Trend This Year
Fashion trends change all the time, with everyone wearing shoulder pads and shell suits in the ‘80s, cargo pants in the ‘90s, low-rise bootcut trousers and belly tops in the ‘00s, and skinny jeans and ballet pumps in the ‘10s.
Well, this year, the one thing that is taking over the fashion world is the trend for baggy T-shirts printed with pop culture icons on the front.
The reason why these are proving hugely popular this year is because they hint at the person’s tastes, era and possibly even, their political, social or cultural views, depending on what pop culture T-shirt they choose.
This is why band merchandise has always sold well, with The Licensing Industry Merchandiser’s Association reporting that sales generated by licensed merchandise reached $369.6 billion (£277.10 billion) last year and 11.6 per cent of this was from the music sector.
Music fans love to wear T-shirts with their favourite artist’s image, album cover, logo or artwork on the front, as it demonstrates what they like to listen to, and ultimately, their personality.
According to BBC 6 Music, it can connect an artist and fan, with the wearer helping to promote the band at the same time as the music brings listeners together.
You might spot someone wearing a T-shirt of a musician you like and start talking to them, for instance, which could lead to a good friendship in the long run. It is not only a good conversation starter, but also bonds people on a deeper level, as they discuss their favourite songs and other bands they enjoy.
Lots of young people these days are wearing T-shirts with bands, musicians, or celebrities that they wouldn’t have been alive for. However, it can serve as a tribute to their past success and adds a vintage element to their fashion choice.
What’s more, lots of things in pop culture are having a resurgence at the moment, such as Oasis after their huge reunion tour, and Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away earlier in the year.
